Autumn is my favorite season. The mornings and evenings are cooler, and the daytime summer heat is no longer so intense. In our modern lives we no longer concern ourselves with harvesting the fields and stockpiling for the winter, but in our own ways we still inherently begin to change our focus and make our own preparations for anticipated holidays and cold weather.
I like to think of autumn as the time when the sun sets on our year. We get our work finished and put our tools away before retiring into our cozy home for the night. There we make plans for the new day.
Autumn is a time of reflection and thanksgiving. Ideally, it is a time to celebrate and share our abundance and blessings with family and friends. This year, we have created and revamped some lovely and celebratory hand embroidery patterns to bring in the autumn thanksgiving season.
Our first pattern captures autumnal color changes when foliage is still green but starting to make that transition. The fabric panel is yarn dyed Essex linen by Robert Kaufman in the color Aqua, and we’ve pre-printed the pattern right onto the fabric.
Our happy harvest pattern is a chance to play with beautiful autumn colors on a simple and rustic design.
Let us not forget to give thanks this season. Our best local radio host implores us every day to think of at least 3 things that we’re grateful for.
Pumpkins are one of my favorite things. Pumpkin pie is my FAVORITE. Roasted pumpkin seeds are a yummy, crunchy snack, and Jack-o-Lanterns are super fun. Are they fruits or vegetables?
And finally, Oliver Owl makes his appearance in his autumnal garb. We have a barred owl that visits us once or twice this time of year. Absolutely fascinating bird. Huge! Its who-who-hoot is awe inspiring, mesmerizing, and at the same time creepy. I love to watch him, but in the back of my mind I’m thinking it’s going to gouge my eyes out or swoop down and carry away the neighbor’s small dog.

With summer winding down it’s a great time to start a new stitching project, but also don’t forget to jump in a big pile of leaves this year!
